Losing Their Wager

Part 1

Ashley Smith was a fairly normal teenage girl. At the mature age of 13, she was the youngest of the four Smith teens, junior to her brother Brad, who was 15, and her sisters Lisa and Jill, who were 18 and 21 respectively. It wasn't much fun being the youngest kid in the family, but it had gotten a little better lately, since she was a teenager. Still, even her college-age sisters still lived at home as they worked for their undergraduate degrees, so she was still hemmed in by elders on all sides. It was so frustrating!

Jill, the eldest of the Smith siblings, insisted that Ashley had it made, that she 'got away with murder' as she put it, compared to what it had been like when she as the firstborn had been 13.

"Mom and Dad are pushovers for you guys," Jill had laughed one evening, "they're so mellow compared to how they used to be!"

Maybe so, but it didn't feel to Ashley as if she had it made. It felt as if her parents still looked at her and saw a little baby, or at best a tiny child. She was 13, a teenager, she'd be in high school in the fall, and yet she felt so frustrated by her early curfew, the endless rules and her parents' refusal to let her go to the movies with Stephen.

She sighed dreamily as she thought of Stephen. Ashley was in her bedroom, sprawled out on her bed, as she mused about her life and about how adorable her boyfriend Stephen was. I mean she had a boyfriend now, surely her parents understood that meant she wasn't a kid anymore!

Ash sighed, and rolled over onto her back, crossing one socked foot over the other and contemplating the unfairness of life.

I should at least be able to have a little more fun right now, the girl mused, but no, Mom and Dad had to leave Jill in charge! I mean she's my sister, and I love her, but she is soooooo anal, she's almost worst than Mom and Dad! i swear you'd think she'd at least let me see Stephen without the third degree, but no, I don't even get a break when my parents are out for the weekend!

With another exaggerated sigh, Ashley rolled back over onto her belly, and tried to focus her attention on her reading assignment for American History. Unfortunately, in her current mood she was having a lot of trouble focusing on the doubtless important question of the Constitutional Convention and Sherman's Compromise. Her mind kept drifting back to her own life and all her little dissatisfactions about it.

I wonder why Mom and Dad were laughing so much when they were leaving? Ashley found herself wondering. I know the Crayton's are old friends of theirs, but they sounded kind of...funny. Like they were sharing some kind of joke or something. Oh, well, none of my business I guess.

Ash tried again to focus on her history assignment. With an effort of her considerable will power, she managed to lock her brain onto the subject matter, and began to read about how the compromise between northern and southern States had enable the Philadelphia Convention to actually create a working government. Ashley was sufficiently absorbed in her studies, in fact, that she completely failed to hear the sound of a car engine outside, car doors opening and shutting, and the front room door opening and shutting. She continued to absorb her lesson, in fact, until Brad stuck his head in her door.

"Hey, Squirt," Brad said, "Mom and Dad are home, and they want us to come downstairs, Dad said they have something important to tell us!"

"I thought they weren't supposed to be home until late this evening," Ashley said as she put aside her textbook, sat up on the bed, and stretched. "It's only 3:30."

"Yeah, I know," her brother said, as the younger girl got to her feet. She paused to put on her sneakers, then decided agaisnt it, instead following after her older brother in her socked feet. "Apparently they came home early because they have some kind of important announcement or other."

"Oh, really? I wonder what's up?" Ashley inquired, more thinking aloud than actually asking Brad. He answered her anyway, however.

"I dunno," the 15 year old said, "but I have to say Dad had a weird look on his face when he told me to go fetch you, so I wonder if it has anything to do with you? What have you been doing lately, and what's up not telling me about it?"

"I haven't been doing anything!" Ashley protested. "I mean, nother major, and nothing Mom and Dad would know about! I must be you!"

"Me?!" Brad laughed. "Sis, I've been spending all my time either in class or at ball practice for the last two weeks! I haven't had the time to do anything!"

"Oh well," Ashley said as she and her brother came down the stair, "I guess we'll know soon enough!"
