For those of us over a certain age, the 1940s and 50s were the hayday of enemas in middle American culture. Red rubber bags with long hoses and black nozzles hung in many bathrooms. Weekday evenings or Saturday afternoons were "enema time", with mothers, aunts, nannys, and even older sisters administering.
