I attended an all boys summer camp when I was 12. It was a summer sports activity camp that was several weeks long.
I remember going to my private pediatrician with my mom, as the camp required a physical exam form and medical history form submitted prior to attending the camp. It has been more than a year since I had a physical, so it kinda worked out well.
My mom didn't come in with me, and she waited out in the waiting area. I went in, and the nurse told me to take off everything except my underpants.
The exam was routine, and included a hernia, and testicle exam. Being uncut, she did ask me if my foreskin gave me any problems, and I said no. She never retracted my foreskin. But after that I was allowed to get dressed.
The medical history and physical exam form was submitted to the camp, and during the first week of camp, I was notified by the counselor to go to the nurse's cabin at a certain time. I found out that all campers will have an another physical exam by the camp nurse, even though every camper had to submit a medical history form and have a physical by their own pediatrician prior to attending the camp.
The exams were done in private, but I was told by the nurse to take off my shirt and shoes when I saw her. She just got my weight and height, and then told me to sit down on the small exam table. She checked my ears and nose, then she listened to my heart and lungs, and then told me to lie down, and checked my abdomen. It was routine..
Then she told me to stand up, and told me to drop my sports shorts and underpants. I did, but she pulled it down when I didn't pull it down far enough. She checked for hernia, telling me to cough, and then she checked the testicles to see if they came down. She told me that I was uncircumcised, and then rolled my foreskin back, and asked me if it hurts.
I answered no, and then she told me to turn around, and touch my toes, while my shorts and underpants are still at my knees. I felt her part my buttocks briefly, and then she told me to get dressed, and go back to activities.
I knew everyone got this kind of exam, and what I didn't understand was, why do they need to perform a physical again when they require it prior to attending the camp in the first place? (By own pediatrician or doctor)
My mom knew about the physical, but she just said that it is good since they wanted to make sure that the campers are healthy.
It was a topic of conversation for a moment between the other campers, and I remember a good number of the other guys saying that it was unnecessary since they already visited a pediatrician just months before....
I also attended other camps when I was younger, and I know that the other camps required a physical prior to attending the camp by your own doctor, but never did a physical again at the camp.
