I found a couple more doctors that offer free skin cancer screenings. Wish I'd known about this earlier. Already had my exam with one and have an appointment with the other.
Before I went to the exam, the doctor sent me a new patient packet. It contained the usual new patient form as well as some information about what to expect. It was quite similar to the information I got at my previous exam.
"Why should I get a full body exam?
Annual full body exams are vital to detect skin cancer as early as possible. Every year, tens of thousands of cases of melanoma are detected. When caught early, these cancers can be easily treated to avoid spreading.
What happens during a full body exam?
One of our assistants will bring you back to a private exam room. After gathering some basic information, you'll be left alone to undress and wait for the doctor. Melanoma can occur anywhere, so we ask that you undress completely so the doctor may perform a thorough exam. The exam itself lasts 10-15 minutes. If areas of concern are identified, the doctor may discuss additional steps.
Do I have to be naked for the exam?
We highly recommend that you undress completely. Under garments can hide cancers that would otherwise be easily detected. If for any reason you cannot undress completely, please dress so the doctor can see as much as your skin as possible."
So I showed up for my appointment and ended up in another exam room. The assistant took some basic information, then gave an explanation about the exam that was similar to what they'd sent me. She asked me to go ahead and get undressed, and said the doctor would be in shortly.
I took off my clothes and sat on the exam table to wait. And wait. And wait. It had probably been about ten minutes. Finally, there was a knock at the door. Instead of the doctor, however, it was the assistant. She came in and apologized for the wait saying that another appointment was taking longer than expected and asked if there was anything she could get me.
I told her it was no problem. She thanked me for my patience, then started making small talk while I as sitting there naked on the exam table. A few minutes later, the doctor arrived. She apologized for the delay and introduced herself. The assistant left the room. She was very thorough. She spent a good amount of time checking my genital area, during which time I got hard. She just said, "Sorry about that. We're almost done."
She finished the exam and didn't find anything of concern. She finished the paperwork and then said the assistant would come back in to give me some information about performing self exams at home.
I waited naked on the table. The assistant came in less than a minute later. She stopped at the door and said, "Oops, did you still need a minute to get dressed?" I replied that I hadn't realized we were finished yet. "That's okay," she said. "Do you want me to come back?"
I laughed and said there didn't seem much need to get dressed now. She smiled and closed the door behind her. She gave me a form with the outline of a body, and explained that I should examine my own skin and mark down any moles I see and changes that occur. She reminded me to make sure that I'm naked when I do the exam. I laughed and said I don't think that'll be a problem. She let out a chuckle and said, "It would appear not."
Wanting to prolong the experience, I asked how I was supposed to check my own back. She explained that I should use a full length mirror, and that she could give me a quick demo. There was a mirror in the room. I said sure, and she had me stand up. I was still hard. She showed me what to look for and what to put on the diagram.
After we were done, she left me alone to get dressed.
