I was put in frog leg position for catheter insertion prior to my hysterectomy per my medical records but I was under anesthesia so I wasn't aware of it at the time.

When I was young. the pediatrician always told me to put my legs like a frog. He then examined and touched me down there, when I was 11 or 12 he started pulling out the stirrups and always did a vaginal-rectal exam, I hated it at the time but the memories were so exciting

Usually with the patient reclined or flat on their back. If the patient was in a sitting position access to the genitals would be very difficult.

The gynecologists i have seen have never used the frog leg position only old pediatricain (many many years ago) and our family dr but I know our current pediatricain still uses it. Essenitally if only an extern exam then frog leg positon is all thats required but for a gynecologist they need either bottom at the end of the couch of at least evelated from the bed so they can angle tools downwards etc when trying to visualise the cervix.

I had a woman tell me when seeing a new doc(woman doc)(she told me this the next day after it happened) that the doc asked her to put her feet together..the bottoms. This of course spread her legs "frog leg position" .The doctor then did an internal.Then said "now we are going to use the speculum".Then lifted up the stirrup at the side of the table, lifted up one of her feet and bent her leg out a bit..and back a fair bit..putting her calf into it. Then the same for the other leg. Then put his hands inside her knees and spread her legs.Then folded down the end of the table so her bum was now off the end.Then raised the stirrups really high..(she said probably a foot..and maybe another 6"!) and spread them really wide.She said she had never been spread anywhere near as wide..nor her legs up as high..or her knees back as far..and felt like she was suspended in the air off the end of the table. It really hurt her back. Then came a huge speculum! And she moaned a lot..as it took 5 times! to get it in. And moaned even more as it was opened up so wide! She had had exams before..by different doctors..and there was nothing wrong. She had no idea why the exam was this way? Didn't see that doc again.

Had it done to put in a catheter when I was in labor but I had an epidural so I didn't feel anything

I cannot understand why this link cannot be opened outside of the UK - although I must believe it because others have complained of the same problem, with other similar links.

Because I am in the UK I cannot of course check for myself but it just seems so strange, because it is clearly on the internet and should be available anywhere!

I recall that on occasion links that start with http// have not opened but they have when the http// has been removed and the link starts with www.

Another possible way into viewing this programme - though again I cannot check it, being in the UK - might be to go to www.channel4.com - there is a link on the left hand side of the Home page to 4od from where you might be able to open an Embarrassing Bodies link - though I suspect availability there might be time limited. Try 'Catch-up' from the 4od menu for earlier dates.

Maybe other members from the other continents could check this and report back here? Perhaps try actually typing in the address to the address bar instead of clicking the link. Perhaps also Webmaster can help with an explanation?

Embarrassing Bodies on the UK Channel 4 site is so interesting it's unfortunate if it cannot be viewed elsewhere.

Unfortunately, BigK, when it comes to streaming videos from and to other countries, it's not that simple; I sometimes wish it were.

For example, the BBC iPlayer is only available for users to download or stream inside the UK (though short video extracts can be viewed within such things as news reports which are usually available worldwide, and radio programmes are available in full) and this is because of rights issues connected with the content of the programmes. There will also be the potential to sell programmes to other countries, which would obviously be compromised if they were freely available on the net. It must also be remembered that the BBC is mainly funded by a licence fee paid by UK residents and it would be rather unfair if a very large percentage of the Corporation's output could be seen by people who were not licencepayers; radio programmes are exempt because no fee is payable for receiving them.

Many of the same reasons (though not the licence-fee issue) will apply to 4oD where access to content is restricted, though I understand some of it is sometimes made available to overseas viewers, and much (but not all) of the output of their sister channel, E4, is available to view outside of these shores.

Looking at it from this side, I have found I can't watch some programmes from sites such as Retrovision (which streams old movies and tv shows) when they are hosted by companies such as 'Hulu'; again this is due to copyright issues.

Of course, a lot of stuff finds its way onto sites such as YouTube and Daily Motion, though this would invariably be without the relevant broadcaster's permission, hence the notices that often appear saying the content has been removed for copyright reasons. I have noticed that quite a few extracts from 'Embarrassing Bodies' are on 'Daily Motion' so perhaps the scenes mentioned here will pop up on there eventually.

I understand what you say about copyright - I guess I was seeking a more simplistic remedy/explanation.

My pleasure. What I have explained - or tried to anyway - is the basic position as I understand it, though there are lots of anomalies that no doubt help to keep lawyers earning a crust or two!

Yes. This was the position our male pediatrician placed us in to examine our genitals. I remember it vividly and thought it was beyond embarrassing! I hated it. He would push my knees all the way open, flat on the table. Then he would use his fingers to open everything up and look around without inserting anything.

Soumise..its more of a pediatric position that is/was actually quite common. As for LadyM, I'm sure you hated it but you knew it needed to be done right?..A little peek never hurt anyone. Its also a position I employ in my clinic!

The frog position is typically used in the UK for adult female genital examination, very few docs have stirrups except perhaps in a hospital/consultant situation.

My pediatrician always had me in this position for the genital exam- she just spread the labia open and looked- didn't insert anything into my vagina or use a speculum.

On the BBC Call the Midwife, which airs in the U.S. ON PBS, patients are told by stern nuns and midwives to lie heels to bottom, knees spread apart.

All the time here in UK, it is the standard position for cervical smears. I also had a medical this year and the internal exam which was part of that was done with me in the frog position. The Dr was very nice and gentle for the exam and was apologetic when she asked me to slip off my knickers (the employment exam was done with me in T-shirt and knickers which is about as undressed as I have ever been for a medical exam), when it came to asking me to assume the position it was a very brisk ok ankles together and knees apart so the bottom of your feet are together. So very much a diamond shape. Did have a sheet for a covering but still more exposed than I have been for a while as I wear a skirt to smears and don't have to take that off.

I have never been examined in the frog leg position by any gynecologist or by my pediatrician. However, I was recently introduced to this position during a play exam. I think it would feel odd to be in this position in a real exam, but it certainly is fun in a play situation!
