I arrived at the doctors' office about 10 minutes early and was called in almost immediately. I had the same nurse's assistant as prior years. She is about my age (54) and is very friendly. As I entered the exam room area she had me stop in the hallway and did an eye exam on a wall chart. Then it was over to the scale and then she had me stand against the wall to get my height.
We went into the exam room and she had me remove my shirt so she could take a waist measurement. This was new. She then had me lie down and took my blood pressure and pulse. She left the room and came back to do an EKG. When she was done she said I was to take everything off and handed me a gown and a paper sheet. She left and I stripped. I just placed the gown over my lap and put the sheet back into the cabinet. I've done this in the past and my doctor has never said anything. It's much easier this way. A paper sheet is overkill.
My doctor knocked and came in. She spent 20 minutes going over my history. She then spent another 20 minutes examining me. Eyes, ears, nose throat, reflexes. She listened to my lungs and also placed the stethoscope on my carotid arteries. She then listened to my heart. She had me lay back and listened to my heart again. She moved down and listened to my abdomen. She then pressed all over my abdominal area.
She put on a pair of exam gloves and pushed into my armpits to feel the lymph nodes. She moved the gown down a bit exposing my genitals and pushed around the base of my penis and the surrounding area. She then moved the gown down around my ankles and examined my testicles. As thorough as she is she has never had me stand to do a hernia check. I'm not sure why since she is not shy about the genital exam. She asked me to roll onto my left side and then checked my prostate.
She sat down and we discussed some minor issues and the chatted about various topics unrelated to me for another 15 minutes. The total time spent with the nurses' aide and my doctor was an hour and 15 minutes. After leaving I went to a lab to have blood work done along with a urine sample.
I've had this doctor for seven years. She has never rushed and has always been thorough. Based on experiences of others I feel fortunate that I have a doctor who takes her time and never rushes.
