Reminds me of an incident I had been informed of years ago when I worked for a large steel mill. I was an assistant to one of the supervisors in the mill.
Once a year all the supervisors and salaried personnel had to submit to a 3-day executive physical exam.
As it turned out, one of the supervisors had a problem with rectal exams of any sort. He would completely freak out if a doctor tried to give him a rectal exam.
Anyway, on the second day of testing, one of the stations was the gastroenterological department. All of the supervisors were to be subjected to a rigid sigmoidoscopy. None of the guys was any too happy about it, but managed to get through it alright.
Unfortunately, the "goosey" supervisor was so scared and nervous waiting for his turn to come, his fellow supervisors were afraid he might pass out.
When his name was called to go into the exam room, which in itself was very intimidating, with a proctological table in the center of the exam room, and all kinds of instruments set out on a stainless steel table, the poor guy was led in (literally) to the room by a male nurse, and given instructions on how to undress completely from the waist down, then kneel on the ledge of the exam table.
After removing his underwear and shoes and socks, he knelt on the ledge. The nurse then had him put his head down on the table, then began using the foot pedals on the table to lower the head of the table so that the guy's head was near the floor, and his butt and feet were up in the air.
Up to this point, he seemed to be totally out of it, obviously completely traumatized by what was happening.
Then the doctor came into the exam room, walked up to the table and addressed the patient, trying to assess his level of apprehension. The doctor, apparently, had been tipped off that this guy was "goosey", and might present somewhat of a problem.
So the doctor told him to just try to relax, breathe deeply through his mouth, and "it'll be over before you know it".
Sounded good, but after the doctor had gloved up, and lubricated his index finger, the nurse took his hands and spread the guy's cheeks apart. This was enough to get the guy pulling away from the nurse's hands. When the doctor put his finger on his butthole, the supervisor jumped and put his arms behind him, and tried to push the doctor's hands away. There was no way the doctor could insert his finger.
At this point, the doctor told the supervisor that if he didn't settle down, he would have to call some hospital personnel in to the room to help restrain him. But it was no use. The supervisor was now completely reacting out of fear.
So, unfortunately, 4 attendants who were in the hallway, were called in to hold down the man's arms and legs. Eventually the doctor was able to complete the digital exam. When the sigmoidoscope was inserted into him, the poor guy literally broke down sobbing and begging to have the instrument removed, claiming he had to go to the bathroom, and he wouldn't be able to hold it any longer.
After the exam was finished, the attendants let go of him, the table was lowered, and he was helped off the table.
When the nurse led him out of the exam room and back into the hallway, the other supervisors were all sitting in folding chairs along the hallway. When the "goosey" supervisor realized that the whole incident was witnessed by these guys, he just sat down and put his head down. The guys really felt bad because of the trauma this guy went through.
Unfortunately, though, the next day at work, the other supervisors started to spread the story to everyone in their respective departments. Before long it seemed that the whole mill knew about it.
When my supervisor first told me about it, I couldn't understand why a person would let medical staff force him to have an examination. Then I began to rationalize it. If this guy refused the exam, the company could fire him, since it was a mandatory exam for everyone. I still feel for the guy, though. I don't know why a person would be so panicked by a rectal exam, but it just so happens that I have a few black male friends who say they would rather die of prostate cancer than have a rectal exam. Go figure.
