Code words for getting your temperature taken?

Hi,

A couple of years ago I bought a Hello Kitty electronic thermometer and a Spongebob Squarepants electronic thermometer on e-bay. We have never used either of them, however the running joke became when it's temperature time:

"OK, on your tummy! It's Hello Kitty time!"

and

"On your tummy and pull 'em down.. and if you're REAL good, you can have a Crabby Patty when we're done!"

Does anyone else have, either seriously or as a joke, a "code word" for having their rectal temperature taken?

"OK, on your tummy I need to check your temperature. It more accurate this way.

Hahahaha, Old, that gave me a real laugh too. A karmic bum, I mean bump for you. lol.

No code words for me. If I show any signs of not feeling good or running a fever, my wife first feels my forehead. If she pulls my underwear down and tells me to turn over onto my left side as she's heading for the bathroom cabinet, it's obvious what's about to happen.

It was always let's see what the little red case says cause our rectal thermometer came in a red plastic pen style case

Honestly, I don't. If one of my patients needs to have their temp taken rectally either they are in the dying process anyway, or if they are alert and for some reason or another I do have to take it rectally, then I just tell them the way it is.

I will tell them both pretty much the same thing, as I believe the last thing to go is hearing. So I say something like, "okay (insert their name here), I'm going to take your temp, and it has to go in your bottom because, (insert reason here)."

Then I do what I have to do to get my job done while at the same time keeping them as comfortable and least embarrassed as I can, and with as much modesty and dignity as I can as well.

My ex-boyfriend used to use the same phrases my mother always would, because he knew it invoked childhood memories and turned me on. "If you don't open your mouth, I'll have to get the baby thermometer" and "Tummy time, *insert name here*, this one has to go in your bum" are some of the most common phrases.

When we got the Spongebob thermometer, a whole new set of jokes rose out of that ("Ready to put this in your Bikini Bottom?")

LOL, I LOVE IT!.. and nice to know I'm not the ONLY one with a Spongebob Squarepants thermometer in their collection.

Just the standard time to take your temperature and I alway knew where it was going nothing needed to be said

Growing up, mom would just say, "I have to take your temperature. Go lay down and turn over." At the doctors, the anticipation was far greater and always felt more embarrassing since I had been required to undress for my exam and wait. The waiting has always made me nervous as I scanned the room and continue to do so. Some nurses are very clear about it, "I have to get your rectal temperature" or "Turn over for this," as she holds a lubed thermometer. I think that gesture is far more powerful than hearing any words. Seeing her prepare the thermometer or get some lube leaves no doubt as to what is going to take place. It is a very powerful equalizer regardless of one's age that the next step is having your cheeks exposed and spread! As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words," and always wonder how I must look lying there with it inserted and having to wait for it to register.

Per Julie 13's comment, there was very little effort to code anything with my receiving a rectal temperature. At home, I was called into my mom's bedroom where there was a jar of vaseline along with the thermometer case on her nightstand, I was simply instructed to lay on my tummy and she would take down my pants, pajama bottoms, etc. At the pediatrician's, it was the anxiety of not really knowing. As soon as the BP was completed, I would watch the nurse walk to the counter with the BP cuff and then she would open a drawer where the vaseline was kept, and then take the thermometer out of the holder with alcohol and rinse it off. At that point, she'd say to me to turn over onto my tummy for my temperature. I would have tremendous butterflies knowing what was ahead, aside from the fact that my mom was also there talking with her.

My mom's phrase of choice was always "let's check you out" which only meant let me take your rectal temperature to see if you have a fever. Later, as I got older, she would say let me take your temp. But for whatever reason she would never say that if it was going to go into my bottom. And when she came into the room with the thermometer and Vaseline in hand she would tell me to "roll over and pull your pants down." And that was just it, nothing more was said. She would shake down the thermometer and swipe it through the jelly, getting a big blob onto the bulb and swiftly push it up into me. Than five minutes of golden silence.

If I looked ill or wanted to stay at home from school, they could say: "Maybe it's better to check your temperature". Then I knew I had to go to my bed and undress my underwear.

There were no code words in my house. "I'm going to take your temperature," was the only thing that was said. I would put up a fuss. I absolutely hated it. (Then).

"Do you wanna play Doctor, Doctor??" 😈😈😈

"We can't stop until the bag is empty and the girl is full!" That's what is sometimes used for enemas at our house.

Sometimes it's just "Panties to the Ankles!"

Temperature taking at the doctor's left little to the imagination. It was an automatic procedure after I had undressed and been weighed. The only question was if the nurse or doctor would take my temperature with or without a parent there to supervise me. The nurse often had me lay on my belly while the doctor, who would take it most often during my adolescence, had me turn onto my side. In both instances, my briefs were lowered below my knees if left on at all!
