So I live in North IL, about 45 minutes from the border. We host a private playspace here, which we offer to anyone interested in play - sort of.
We don't host private dom/dommes here, we don't offer any kind of financial exchanges/rentals, etc. We only allow in those who we have met before, and only for play purposes.
I would love to see a more available dungeon, public playspace. When I was in AZ, they had a setup run by a local group (APEX) who offered playspace to members, as well as parties/events, etc. They were, however, very standoffish (even more than normal for the BDSM crowd), and very elitist (if you didn't know everyone, and weren't special best friends with person x, you had no chance of any social interaction). It was not terribly approachable (it took me years to even be able to get in the front door). While I recognize the challenges they faced, it could have been better. While I fully recognize that any attempt to create a more public playspace will have to be approached VERY carefully (after all, considering the position of the average [non-kinky] person, if your neighbor announced intent to open a sexy playspace....most would be incredibly unhappy), in order to succeed, it also must be accessible, even to those who aren't 10 year friends of those running it.
We built ours for our use, and will continue to use it for that purpose, as well as offering it to friends, but I would be willing and interested to support and/or help with a more available playspace. There are MANY hoops to jump through, and Susie is right - this is a long road to walk, but if there are in fact others willing to walk it, well then....perhaps it could work?
