This is something I think back on a lot. My school had a "school based health clinic" rather than just a basic nurse's office. We were, I THINK, one of the first generation of schools to experiment with that. it was a partnership between my school district and a large university that a medical school. The result of this, also taking into account that this was decades ago before costs became prohibitive, was that my school was somewhat notorious for VERY detailed physical exams. More so among kids who participated in sports or work programs that required more frequent visits. Because the exams were detailed, they were also lengthy, and waiting your turn was often lengthy.
When I was a senior in HS, we had our big "senior assembly." Maybe your school did something like that. It was a tradition wherein seniors put on a show of skits and variety bits that related to the school experience. Skits about the cafeteria were common, as were skits poking gentle fun at teachers and staff. My year, four or five boys in my class did a skit about the health center. They were kids for whom football was their main sport. My sports were wrestling, boxing and baseball, but of course I knew these guys. The skit relied on the comic cliche of the medieval dungeon (prisoners and torture victims having a chat as they hang by their wrists in chains). I think the show "You Can't Do That On Television" had similar sketches. Anyway, the skit went like this:
In front of the curtain one of the boys sat a desk. He was wearing a scrub-type shirt and making notes as another boy came in. (I've changed names here, just in case):
GREG (seated at desk): Can I help you?
MARK (entering): I'm Mark Smith. I was told I had to be here before 9:00 am. I'm sort of in a hurry though.
GREG: It takes as long as it takes.
[The sound of another boy behind the curtain yelling "OWWWWW! That hurt."
MARK (hearing, now nervous): On second thought, maybe I'll come back later.
GREG: No. You are required to be here. No getting out of it.
MARK: But...
GREG: No arguing. You've been here before?
MARK: Yeah...
GREG: Then you know the routine. Start getting ready.
[Greg stands up and pulls away the curtain showing two other boys in only their underpants, hanging by chains.]
[Mark, in his underwear, reaches up and puts his hands in the hanging chains like the other two boys. The boy next to him is Derek who was extra hairy - very hairy chest and stomach.]
MARK: So, how long you guys been waiting?
DEREK: Well, I was brought in here to get my physical for first grade.
There are parts I've forgotten, I'm sure, and I probably didn't get the lines exactly right. But I remember the sketch so well and I wished at the time and now that I had been in it. There was a VHS made of the show that we watched at a party (this sketch was maybe a 20th of the whole thing) but I never saw it again. If a copy still existed, I would pay money to get it.
